Dr. Barry Gaudry

Dr. Barry Gaudry

B.D.S (Uni of Sydney) M.D.S (Uni of Sydney) F.D.S.R.C.S (Eng)

Hello, I am Barry Gaudry. I was born and brought up in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, and having survived being hit by a Bondi tram at the age of 5, graduated in Dentistry from the University of Sydney in 1957.

After 2 years in the Australian Army as a dental officer, I went overseas in 1960. Between 1960 and 1965 training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery units in various hospitals in England in Liverpool, Birmingham and London. I obtained my Fellowship in Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1964.

I returned to Australia in 1965 to take up a joint appointment at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the University Dental School in Adelaide; becoming an inaugural Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Dental Surgeons in 1967.

In 1968 my family and I moved to Canberra and started Canberra’s first private practice in the speciality of oral and maxillo-facial surgery. I was in solo practice in the speciality from 1968-2000 in Canberra except for 1989-1993. During this 4 year period I spent 2 years at the Royal Darwin Hospital, as senior specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Darwin have been described as “the fractured jaw capital of Australia”. I then spent another 2 years in solo speciality private practice in Penrith before returning to Canberra.

Apart from attending many conferences in Australia and overseas, I have continued my post-graduate experience and study during extended visits to centres of excellence in orthognathic surgery in England, Europe, and the USA. I have pioneered orthognathic surgery in Canberra from 1969 when carrying out my first osteotomy of the mandible.

My wife Lois and I have 9 children and 12 (at last count) grand-children. My hobbies include, golf (“very keen, but not very good”), gold prospecting, 4-wheel driving, outback and other travel and reading.
