Canberra Surgicentre was officially opened on the 15
th August 1997 by Kate Carnell MLA,
Chief Minister of the ACT & Minister for Health & Community Care.
The Directors, Drs Peter Vickers, Michael Cooper, Paul Hammans and Staff celebrated this special
occasion at The Green Herring Restaurant along with their medical colleagues, allied support
team and other medical service providers.
The Canberra Surgicentre has provided Specialist services (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) to Canberra
and surrounding areas since 1997 and has extended their consulting practices to Batemans Bay, Merimbula,
Bega, Wagga Wagga and Sydney (Balmain & Bondi). Following the purchase of Dr Andrew Smith's rooms,
we now are able to offer our patients a choice of either attending the North side practice in Braddon
or the South side practice at Deakin.
Canberra Surgicentre has grown over the past 10 years as demonstrated in our number of patients since
the Year 2000. In the Year 2000 (819), 2001 (1586), 2002 (2225), 2003 (2111), 2004 (1999), 2005 (2396),
2006 (2739) and 2007 to date (1174).
Canberra Surgicentre is accredited with The Australian Council on Health Care Standards and due for its
Organisational Wide Survey in 2009. Surgeons, Anaesthetists, Staff and Allied Health Professionals work
conscientiously to deliver a high level of quality care to our patients.
The Directors of Canberra Surgicentre provide support to their dental and medical colleagues on a one to
one basis, mentoring and through the provision of educational evenings. Educational evenings include a
variety to topics ranging from Implants, Medical emergencies and their management in the Dental Office,
Cardiovascular medicine and prophylaxis of bacterial endocarditis, overview of autoimmune diseases and
their effect on oral mucosae, Complementary Therapies in Dentistry and many more interesting topics.
Feedback from their colleagues has demonstrated the evenings have proved informative, enjoyable and a
great time to catch up with their colleagues/friends and meet new dentists within the Canberra and local region.
The Directors have also invited their dental colleagues to participate in an Externship program. The
course is suited to general dentists at all skill levels and is for those who have done little exodontia or
minor oral surgery, as well as those who are experienced in these fields and wish to extend their knowledge
and skills. Activities have been tailored to suit practitioner's preferences where possible.
We now look forward to future challenges and working alongside our dental and medical colleagues
in the provision of specialist services at Canberra Surgicentre.
In conclusion, the Directors and Staff would like to thank their medical and dental colleagues for their
ongoing support over the past 10 years. It is only with this support that we have been able to achieve
such excellent results for our patients in the Canberra and surrounding community.
