Facial Cosmetic Surgery
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are able to complement and improve facial aesthetics.
An approach is taken to complement both the underlying hard tissue by the use of
facial implants and tighten soft tissue by conventional facial rejuvenation procedures.
The facial implants that are commonly used are mainly directed towards augmentation
of the cheekbones, chin and jaws. The material we use may be either porous or
nonporous implant. These are fixed to the underlying bone by an incision in the mouth.
Generally these procedures are day procedures or a one-night admission in
hospital. Augmentation of the underlying boney foundation of the face gives excellent
cosmesis and is suitable for both young and older patients.
Where there is laxity of the facial skin or abnormal fat deposits then facial
rejuvenation procedures involving selectively liposuction or skin tightening is
to be preferred. This is mostly seen in the older patient who may have lost
teeth prematurely leading to a sunken in facial or jawbone appearance. Allied
to facial rejuvenation surgery is the concept of dental implants and their effect
upon being able to produce a nice smile.
Maxillofacial surgeons are able to offer extensive surgical services to patients
who desire an improvement in the cheeks, upper and lower lips, chin, neck and
jowls. We also work harmoniously with other experts in the field of facial cosmetic
surgery. These may include Dermatologist's, Plastic Surgeons, Cosmetic Surgeons and
Cosmetic Physicians.
